NATRA FAQs
What do we ask of you?
We have a few simple to follow rules for riding on the lands: wear a helmet, do not litter, be courteous to all riders, and no alcoholic beverages. NATRA has a long relationship with the land owner and we have to respect the land and make this work for all riders. Complete set of NATRA's rules are included in the membership application form.
Where is Westpoint?
About 13 miles SW from Lawrenceburg on Tennessee Highway 242.
When can members ride?
After you join the club you can use the lands 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Yes you can ride in the dark if you want, many do.
Can I ride anything on the trails?
No, the limit on vehicle width is maximum 56" wide. No Jeeps or sand buggys. Some trails are restricted to motorcycle-only due to trail width, difficulty, and/or off-camber.
Why do I need to join NATRA to ride where I've been riding for years?
This land is private property where there is no advantage to the land owner to allow anybody to ride or do anything they want, and every reason for liability reduction to forbid anyone from riding under any circumstance. NATRA has worked hard for many years to establish and maintain a reputation that our landlord can trust. NATRA membership assures the land owner that we have your signed release of liability on file, and that you have agreed to abide by our simple common sense rules.
Can I bring guests to ride?
Yes you may bring one guest at a time, limit of 2 guests per year. If your guest joins NATRA then their visit no longer counts against your annual total.
Where do I put the stickers?
There are two different NATRA sticker designs, one for helmets, and one for ORVs. The helmet sticker goes on the back near the center of the helmet. Try to keep it out from under your goggles strap. The ORV stickers are to be placed high and to the right of your motorcycles and/or ATVs. The right front fork, handlebar, number plate, fender, someplace where it can be seen easily.
Do you have membership cards?
Yes, a very nice durable membership card is issued for each person listed on membership application form.
Do I have to carry my membership card while riding?
New for 2008: Yes, the card must be with you at all times on the property. Membership enforcement in 2008 will be strict. Law enforcement officers will be writing trespassing tickets and the membership card is your only defense. Helmet and/or vehicle stickers are not proof of membership.
I hate helmets.
There is no choice on NATRA property, helmet use is mandated by the landlord. Helmetless riders can be spotted from a long distance away. Employees of the landlord are often on the property noting things such as helmet use, or lack of. This is the biggest contention the landlord has with NATRA and our biggest risk for losing the lease. If caught not wearing a helmet your entire family's membership will be terminated immediately, no refunds.
Can I park any place on the property?
Yes, but remember your hauler isn't allowed on the trails. There are several well established parking areas that would be best to use. Do not block any paths, roads, or gates with your vehicle.
How much are the dues?
Yearly dues are $50 per family. The membership term runs from January 1 to December 31. A modest discount is available for those joining late in the year.
Can I camp at Westpoint?
Yes, there is no power or water so bring your own. No camp fires directly on the ground. Do not leave anything behind, pack it in, pack it out.
What kind of trails do you have?
The best! We have all kinds of trails, something for nearly any rider. We have single track tight woods, open two-track trails, fire roads, hills, creeks, gravel, grass, ... but no sand.
How loud is too loud?
The short answer is, "If you have to ask, its too loud." The long answer is that for NATRA to keep access to legal land for riding we have to be as good of a neighbor as possible. If neighbors start complaining it would be very easy for our landlord to decline to renew our lease. This would be terrible news for everyone, especially considering at best loud exhausts make very little additional horsepower, that horsepower is not of much help at Westpoint (Juha Salminen won our first ISDE Qualifier on a 250 four stroke against all comers on his way to 1st overall at the 2006 ISDE in New Zealand), and many loud modified exhausts make less horsepower than stock quiet exhausts.
How are the trails marked?
NATRA uses paper signs 5-1/2" by 8-1/2" (half letter size) of various colors stapled to trees or whatever is handy. We try to put the signs where we guess one will be looking.
Most signs are arrows, others are "W" and "X". Because most signs are arrows, posting signs is known as "arrowing" and all signs are generally known as "arrows".
Arrows apply to all riders at all times. Most are put up in preparation for races but races only serve as motivation and deadline for building new trail.
The meaning of the arrow signs is usually obvious, the arrow points in the direction of the trail. Tilted left or right indicates the trail is turning left or right. Pointing left or right indicates the trail is making a hard turn to the left or right.
An arrow pointing down is a strong recommendation to slow. An arrow pointing left or right and another pointing down on the same tree says, "slow now for turn ahead".
"X" indicates Danger. There is something very close that one need use extra caution. It might be a hill, off camber, hole, ledge, or tree across the trail.
"W" indicates Wrong Way. These are usually found at intersections to indicate the trails not to take. There are no speed limits on NATRA trails where most trails are as narrow as we can make them so its very important for the safety of all that we not meet others head-on at speed. Most NATRA trails are one-way.
"Motorcycle Only" or "MC ONLY" is not an attempt to persecute ATV riders. Motorcyclists have created some trails which are too narrow, off camber, or otherwise impractical for an ATV to negotiate. ATVs could push through on these trails but that would widen the trail and defeat the purpose for which it was created.
