Bankhead Poker Run (5-19-2002)

The morning started off much better, weather wise, than yesterday.  Ole Mother Nature decided to give us a good cold snap.  In fact, a record temp for the month of May, but that didn't matter much cause there was riding to be done.  Paul T. and I met around 8:00AM... ok, I was a little late, sorry Paul, but we got underway and headed toward Bankhead National Forest.  I had never been to Bankhead, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect.  The drive down wasn't that bad except for the zigzagging down gravel roads, and Paul at every turnoff road we came to saying, "Hmm..... well..... no..... yep, THAT'S IT!!"

We pull into into the parking area to find several vehicles already there and ready to ride. (Click all pictures to enlarge!!)

Of course, where there is moto activity, Ron will be there.  He was sporting the new club four-wheeler as well!!

Paul was shooting the breeze with the ranger at signup....

A sign that we all need to read again...

After helping with signup, Paul and I decide to hit the trails and ride a loop.  Immediately, I knew this was going to be different that the trail I normally ride, but it soon became fun.... and the phrase "scary fast" came to mind!  Sometimes something different can be refreshing and fun, even if it isn't really challenging.  That's what Bankhead was for me.  The loop was exactly 11 miles long and easily negotiated by riders of any skill level.

After the first loop.....

Ed and TJ thinking about making a loop on the four-wheelers..

TJ in action... man was he smoking on the Polaris... I think he might sell the KTM   :)  :)

Paul T. having fun on the new 400...

Family out for a day of fun.

By the time Paul and I rolled out of the parking lot, we had put in three loops and got the bikes really muddy.  The club raised a chunk of money for a local charity and proved to the forest rangers that we could manage an event without concern.  Thanks to Ed who did all the paperwork and footwork to make this happen.... who knows what the future holds for us at Bankhead, but this couldn't help but be a great start.
